A Few Things About #blkcreatives moving forward
As we wind down one year and prepare for another, we thought it’d be a great time to re-introduce ourselves. Here’s what you should know about us from here on out.
#blkcreatives (pronounced hashtag Black creatives, always spelled #blkcreatives) is a collective created to share tools, strategies, and resources to help Black creatives grow professionally and earn more.
The name of our newsletter will be called the ‘Do The (Inner) Work’ email.
You’ll know it’s in your inbox when you see this iconic GIF of Damon and Shawn Wayans go up across our social media channels on Sunday evening. It’s kind of like our bat signal.
We’ll be touching on the internal journey of being a creative while providing additional tools, resources, and insight to help us develop as professionals and help us earn more money.
‘Do The (Inner) Work’ is an obvious play on the infamous ‘do the work’ phrase.
We favor execution but we also want you to work on pursuing your best you just as much as you work on pursuing external things. This work could be emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual but the key is to remember that only you know what you need – despite how Internet tries to tell you otherwise. You are the expert and authority in your own life. Trust yourself.
While we’re here, now is a good time to remind you that we don’t view our brand as an expert authority.
First of all, that’s boring.
Think of us as your accountability partner meets your favorite cousin. We’re all trying to win together and we want to do so while having some fun in the process. Life is for living!
Do the (inner) work.
Make your own (rules).
Black culture is pop culture.
Freedom = responsibility.
Collective economic empowerment.
Honor the culture.
We’re not making any more announcements on social media.
Everything will be shared with our dedicated newsletter subscribers, FIRST. If you see if on social media, know that our list got the news already. We love a good “if you know, you know” moment.
Our KINDRD Careers Job Board is now live.
In 2018, we launched KINDRD – an interactive, multi-service creative company that was recently featured on FastCompany.com. Our mission is to build a bridge between multicultural creatives and the work they are worthy of by connecting them to forward-thinking companies.
Because we’re tapped into our influential network of creatives, we know that one of the central components necessary for a sustainable freelance career is finding the right gig. Unfortunately, for many talented creatives of color, those opportunities are hinged upon connecting with gatekeepers they may not have access to.
That’s why we created the KINDRD Careers job board. It’s only $35 per post and this helps us help companies build diverse teams and inclusive cultures for a world that we can all thrive in.
We gotta say it again…
We want to emphasize this point: You are the expert and authority in your own life. Trust yourself. We live in an era where we want to poll and consult social media before every move we make. That gets exhausting and robs you of enjoying who you really are. We’re always going to be a brand that points you back to yourself.
Sustainable impact is now a thing for us.
Getting the bag is GREAT but while we’re getting to the money we also want to make a sustainable impact on the world we live in and that people around us, especially given the way things are set up in this country for Brown and Black people. It’s not just about one of us, it’s about all of us. Sustainable impact means that while we’re building these creative careers, we’re also getting what we need from a spiritual, economic, mental, and emotional.
We’re pursuers of longevity because we want to be around to enjoy the fruits of our labor. “It ain’t about the sprint, it’s about the marathon” as Jeezy the Great once prophesied.
